                      Ad for Camelia
                        menstrual pads, Germany, 1990,
                        Girl! magazine

This is a far cry from the early
                                  Camelia ads (here),
which
                                  promoted one of Germany's first
                                  disposable pads: from a nurse-nun
wagging her finger to a woman's
behind. But those first ads did
contain the flower of a famous
                                  prostitute, the camellia.
Many ads, like this one, picture a
woman's rear to demonstrate that the
pad doesn't show, at least on the
model. And the pants are white to
assure women they too can use the pad
                                  without blood leaking through. See
another ad featuring the back of a
                                    woman's pants.
Compare this to two previous Camelia
                                  ads (from the 1920s,
bottom of page; from the 1930s), and
                                  to a French Modess
                                    ad (probably also from the
                                  1970s); times certainly have changed!
