Kotex menstrual pad ad, Sears, Roebuck
catalog, 1928, U.S.A.
Sears sold Kotex (above) in 1928
at about $0.30 a pad for super in
today's prices. "Super" soon
changed to "hospital" because
women were reluctant to ask for
something sounding so large (but
what is hospital?), and
women used hospital-size pads to
absorb the vaginal discharge that
occurs after childbirth. Note the
nurse, cross and "health
protection," familiar items
creating confidence by association
with medicine.
