The first appearance of menstruation is a sign of physical maturity, the
start of being a woman. It means that the body has prepared itself for
reproduction. Even at birth each ovary has 50,000 eggs that await the maturing
of the body. At the body's maturation one of the follicles matures each
month. The egg moves to the uterus whose walls have thickened to receive
the egg. With an impregnation a pregnancy begins. When that does not occur,
menstruation begins. The body gets rid of the unnecessary substances in
a natural way. These substances are in no way bad, unhealthy or dirty as
is often assumed. The word menstruation comes from the Latin mensis, month,
because the whole process takes a month: from the end of one period to
the beginning of the next. On average, menstruation happens every 28 days
and lasts 3 to 5 days. Small deviations are also completely normal.
