from an exhibition catalog
This illustration comes from
"Menstruation: Monatshygiene im Wandel von
1900 bis heute," the catalog of the
exhibition at the Lorsch branch of the
Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt, Germany,
that occurred from 26 November 1998 to 31
July 1999.

Below: A knitted washable menstrual
pad, about 1948-1950,
made of cotton and muslin.
It belonged to a shepherd's
wife in Upper Hessen.
The exhibition catalog says less wealthy women
used washable pads like this
into the 1950s
or even pads that did NOT have openings for
buttons at either end
to fasten to a belt or underwear.
It measures 330 x 73 x 8 mm (13 x 2.9 x
0.3") and is in the collection
of the Hessian State Museum.
Norwegian women
used pads just like this in the 19th century
and
maybe before.
