                                For years copywriters for Kotex
                                  produced Are
                                    you in the know? advertisements
                                  for teenage American girls (see more
                                  at left and at the bottom of this
                                  page). There are only Caucasians in
                                    these ads, boys' faces look
                                  like the girls', and the advice they
                                  give, and their dress (notice the
                                  tennis duds), suggest at least a middle-to-upper-middle-class
                                    audience. Times have
                                  certainly changed!

                                Look at the old-fashioned desks in
                                  the second picture, at right. And how
                                  dressed up the kids are. Is this high
                                  school or college? Either way it
                                  contrasts hugely with how Americans
                                  dress today.
                                "P.C." for "privileged character"
                                  surprises - but maybe this was Kotex
                                  talk rather than an expression current
