Kotex menstrual pad ad, U.S.A., 1950
Unknown publication
In the waning years of American
painted and drawn advertising Kotex
published a series of ads by popular
illustrator Tom Hall (1908-1965
according to a Web
site). One is below, another is
here.
(Speaking of waning, more than one
tampon advertised itself for the
"waning days" of the period.)
Contemporary illustrator Jon Whitcomb
was another Kotex illustrator.
Happy and lively, these
folks square dance, showing that
Kotex stays in place during twists
and turns. At least that's
what the company wanted.
Pad developers aimed for pads that
would not rope
- twist like the dancers'
intertwined arms - during the hours
women wore them. A tough
goal.
In the 50s women usually wore special belts that
hitched the pad in place or special panties with a
variety of clasping methods to keep
the pad in place.
See an old
fashioned belt and pad and a
current one in the former
museum.
And Kotex published booklets for
girls called Very
Personally Yours, just like
the big words at right.

and other booklets.

My wet basement produced the stain at
the right margin. I've since
moved the vast majority of the
approximately 5000 archives off
site.
